Dental cleanings should be a regular part of your life. These appointments serve two functions: they allow us to examine your teeth for signs of gum disease and damage, and they give us the chance to fully clean your teeth. They are a routine procedure, which means that the team here at Aspire Dental Spa does cleanings every day. While they may be routine, that does not mean you should skip six-month cleanings. They are important for a number of reasons.

How Are Cleanings Done?

The first part of a cleaning is the visual exam. We will closely inspect your teeth, gums, tongue, and mouth to look for signs of disease or for damage. We will use a small mirror to view the backside of your teeth and gums, and we may use other tools to more closely examine certain areas if we believe there may be an issue there.

Once the dental exam is done, we use a tool called a scaler to remove any built-up plaque or tartar from the gums and between the teeth. If you brush and floss regularly, this process likely will not take very long because you will not have a lot of build-up on your teeth.

After we finish removing the plaque and tartar from your teeth, we will brush them. We use an electric toothbrush for this. The point of brushing your teeth is to remove any tartar still on your teeth and to give your teeth a deep cleaning. Because we are looking at your mouth from a different angle that you are able to even with a mirror, we are able to ensure that every tooth is completely cleaned. We follow this up with a professional flossing.

Finally, we will rinse out your mouth and apply a fluoride treatment. This treatment protects your teeth from cavities. We place a gel into a mouthpiece that sits down over your teeth. Normally, you leave this in for a minute to give the gel time to set.

Why Are Cleanings Important?

Cleanings give us a chance to inspect your mouth for signs of oral cancer, gum disease, and other diseases that, if caught early, can be easily treated. The deep cleaning helps prevent tooth damage by removing plaque and tartar, plus we are able to check for cavities and see if you need to have any dental work done.

When Should You Come See Us For A Cleaning?

We recommend our patients come in every six months for a cleaning. Having a deep cleaning twice a year will keep your teeth and gums healthy. Every six months is also the right amount of time to check for various conditions and diseases. It gives us enough time to treat the condition without it becoming an inconvenience for you.

Who Needs To Have Regular Cleanings?

All of our patients need to come in for regular cleanings. Your children should also come in once their baby teeth begin coming in. Like adults, we also recommend children come in every six months. When their adult teeth begin coming in, we may even need to see them a little more often for a time just to make certain everything is progressing as it should. Our office also offers patients a teeth whitening service. If you are interested, do not hesitate to ask us about it.

If you have not been in for a cleaning recently, it is time to schedule one. Call Aspire Dental Spa at (216) 342-4388 today to make an appointment.
