CEREC Same Day Crowns
A CEREC same-day crown, also known as one day crown, is a synthetic ceramic cap crafted in a single session using a CEREC (ceramic reconstruction) machine, which is kept on-site. Once 3D scans of a patient’s mouth have been taken, these scans can be uploaded to the machine that immediately starts making the crown. Therefore this crown is made in a fraction of the time when compared to standard dental crowns, which can take three to five days to be made off-site in a dental lab.
At Aspire Dental Spa, Dr. Lisa Browning understands the demands of our fast-paced world and a patient's need for convenience. Our dentists have the expertise to ensure your same-day crown process goes as quickly and comfortably as possible.
Benefits Of A CEREC Same Day Crown
CEREC same-day crowns have several benefits over standard crowns. There is no need to make a physical impression which is a messy process and uncomfortable for the patient, especially those with a stronger gag reflex. The CEREC camera is a slim wand-like device that can take pictures of the entire oral cavity in minutes.
As these crowns are made using a 3D scan, they are exceptionally accurate. The camera can pick up the slightest contours of a tooth that can be missed by a physical impression. This creates a cap that fits better and blends in more seamlessly.
The same-day crown is made on-site as soon as the 3D scan is complete. That means the patient is still in the chair, making it a single-visit procedure. This is very convenient for patients who can immediately use their teeth without the hassle and discomfort of a temporary crown.
Drawbacks Of A CEREC Same Day Crown
Despite its single-session convenience, same-day crowns have a few disadvantages. As a CEREC machine crafts them, they are made from a small block of ceramic. Standard dental crowns are made of ceramic (or porcelain) fused with metal, which makes them stronger so they last longer. Therefore patients need to be more careful with what they eat and how they use their teeth. CEREC same-day crowns can be damaged and will need to be replaced to prevent damage to other teeth around it.
Additionally, CEREC same-day crowns are not the best option for patients who have other dental issues, such as fractures below the gum line. This is because the CEREC is unable to capture images below the gum line. In such cases, a standard crown is advised.
